Memorial Foundation names Scholar Athletes for the Week of December 18

High School seniors Zandra Spencer from Cahokia High School and Zach Jablonski from Belleville East High School were chosen as Memorial Foundation’s Scholar Athletes of the Week – December 18.

The scholar athlete program, sponsored by Memorial Foundation in cooperation with Memorial Rehab and Sports Medicine and Memorial Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine recognizes one male and one female senior scholar athlete from a high school in Memorial’s primary and selected secondary service area. The weekly award winners from September 2017 through April 2018 will be eligible for one of two $1,500 scholarships to be awarded in May 2018.

Nominated by her counselor, Shannon Taylor, Zandra has a 4.0 GPA and is captain of the varsity volleyball and track teams. She has been a State Qualifier in track for three years and won team state title 2014-2016. Zandra volunteers at a local nursing home, is an Interact member, enrolled JROTC program all four years and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Jablonski was nominated by his volleyball coach, Joe Nesbitt, has a 4.4 GPA and is a member of the varsity volleyball team and marching band. Zach also is an accomplished black belt in karate, participates in Saturday Scholars and has received Scholar Athlete Character Award 2016, 2017 and Chief’s Citizen Certificate of Excellence, March 2017 for lifesaving actions in his community. He is scheduled to receive the Life Saver Award from the Southwest Illinois Law Enforcement Council in January 2018.
